National Theater Live – Frankenstein

The other day, SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) asked told me that she got movie tickets. I asked what movie, and she wasn’t so sure… She said it’s Frankenstein, and though it’s at a movie theater, it’s a play, but on screen, etc…

Well, I like play, so why not… after all, SWMBO must be obeyed!

When we get there, they gave us a pamphlet and explain about “National Theater Live“. This show was originally played at the National Theater in England, and broadcasted to the world. (And the show we went was it’s encore).

The show was played at Springdale 18 Cinema De Lux, just an ordinary movie theater. It started off with a short clip of interviews and previews of the National Theater Live, and I figured right away why my wife wanted to see this even though herself was not sure what kind of show it was… The main cast, Dr. Frankenstein, was played by Benedict Cumberbatch. One of her recent favorite…

Anyhow, I don’t want to spoil the show, so no details, but in short words, it was very good. The sadness, anger, and fear of each characters were well expressed, and they even added some comical phrases to bring laughters.

Another interesting thing about this play is that the main actors who plays Dr. Frankenstein and the creature switches the roll every play. The show we watched was casted Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Frankenstein, and Jonny Miller as the creature, and they also have the version where Benedict Cumberbatch plays the creature and Jonny Miller as Dr. Frankenstein. From what I have read, even tho it is exact the same script, casts, and state setup, but just by changing the roll played by the two main cast changes the impression of the play totally different.

The play was so good, we bought tickets for the next show of the Frankenstein with flipped casting which is on this Sunday (Jan 19th) at the same theater. For anyone who’s interested in play, musical, etc, this is something worth go seeing. Just a piece of warning; there are some nudity and violence in the play, so for those who cannot handle those, it may not be for you….
